Wow, Orange Is the New Black. Are you really going to leave us hanging like that?
Although Season 6 was a bit of a slow burn, the last few episodes packed in a lot. The kickball massacre orchestrated by Barb (Mackenzie Phillips) and Carol (Henny Russell) was prevented thanks to Maria's (Jessica Pimentel) bravery and smart thinking. And it turned out that the blood feud between C Block and D Block was all a big ruse so that Barb and Carol could sneak into B Block and kill Freida (Dale Soules)! However, when the chaos from the kickball field never went down, Barb and Carol quickly turned on each other, killing one another over an anecdote that wasn't even either of theirs to begin with.
Meanwhile, Piper (Taylor Schilling) was granted early release and left Litchfield Max shortly after her wedding to Piper. Blanca (Laura Gómez) and Sophia (Laverne Cox) were also granted early release, but before Blanca could even momentarily reunite with her boyfriend, she was picked up by ICE. Elsewhere, Lorna (Yael Stone) went into labor in a broom closet but was able to make it to Medical. Outside the prison walls, a devastated Taystee (Danielle Brooks) was wrongly convicted of Piscatella's (Brad William Henke) murder, breaking our hearts into a million little pieces. She was then bussed back to Max where we're certain a tense reunion with Cindy awaits.
That's a lot to parse through so let's break down the seven biggest burning questions from the season.
Photo: JoJo Whilden/Netflix1. What will Piper do now? It finally happened: Piper left Litchfield! Fans have been calling for less Piper since, well, Season 1, and now it looks like those prayers have finally been heard. Maybe. Orange Is the New Black will likely follow Piper as she readjusts to the outside world and attempts to make her marriage to Alex (Laura Prepon) work, but we do expect/hope that this means she'll be more of a supporting player than a leading lady. But what will this even look like for Piper?
Six seasons in and it's easy to forget that the show originally followed the life story of Piper Kerman fairly closely — not like it was an exact retelling, but many characters and relationships were drawn straight from reality. Orange seemed to hint that Piper Champan and Piper Kerman's journeys would once again converge when Piper floated the idea of writing her memoir this season. That either could have been a fun in-joke for fans or setting up Piper's sure-to-be insufferable attempt at a writing career in Season 7 (one which hopefully also includes many more appearances by her cold-as-ice mother). If next season does find Piper writing her life's story, it could be a nice swan song for the character before she leaves the show for good. Although if Piper does depart permanently, Pipex fans should start bracing themselves for heartbreak.
Photo: JoJo Whilden/Netflix2. Will Taystee appeal her conviction? There's no denying that Taystee deserves better than what she was given this season, both by her friends, by the justice system and by the show. The trauma Taystee has endured over the past few seasons has been relentless, and the former light of Litchfield deserved a break this season but instead was treated to several of her friends betraying her and the system preferring a conviction over the truth.
Through everything, Caputo (Nick Sandow), of all people, stood by her side and she had the support of the ACLU and Black Lives Matter movement, but none of that was able to save her from a murder conviction. However, that doesn't need to be the end of this harrowing case. Taystee can and should appeal. That's likely the only way she can get some semblance of justice, and Orange owes her — and us — a happier ending here. Now that she's back at Max, maybe she'll even be able to mend things with Cindy (Adrienne C. Moore) and Suzanne (Uzo Aduba) and get them to testify to the truth at her next trial. Or someone will do a Serial or In the Dark-style podcast about Taystee's case. This is probably the more likely option.
Photo: JoJo Whilden/Netflix3. Are Alex, Nicky and Freida still in danger? This season found a few of our favorites getting in over their heads. In her attempt to save Red's (Kate Mulgrew) life and keep Lorna safe, Nicky (Natasha Lyonne) found herself under serious suspicion of Barb's minions. Meanwhile, Alex made a deal to work for Carol in exchange for Badison (Amanda Fuller) leaving Piper alone, and Frieda spent all season fending off the hit Barb and Carol put on her. But now that Barb and Carol are dead, does this mean Alex, Nicky and Freida are all in the clear?
While we bet that Freida is probably safe, we can't imagine Badison letting Alex out of the game easily, and the bad blood Nicky fostered isn't just going to disappear overnight. What will really determine their safety moving forward is who the new top dogs of C and D Block turn out to be. Who knows, maybe Red will once again find herself in a position of power and help her family out... that is, if she's able to forgive them.
Photo: JoJo Whilden/Netflix4. Will we ever see Blanca and Sophia again? The sixth season ended with a heartbreaking twist we never saw coming. After Blanca was granted early release, the apparent blessing turned sour when ICE immediately picked her up for deportation while her boyfriend continued to wait for her none the wiser. Sophia's exit from Litchfield was also bittersweet, with the former firefighter selling out Taystee in order to get back to her wife and son.
But will we see either Blanca or Sophia again? Orange has followed inmates as they reintegrate into society before, but something tells us this really may have been the end for Blanca and Sophia. Laverne Cox has barely been in recent seasons and is consistently lining up other projects, so her departure has been a long time coming. Laura Gómez, on the other hand, may return in some capacity next season. The finale also included Linda (Beth Dover) revealing that PolyCon was going into the business of immigration detention centers, so there's a chance we might see that and Blanca's storyline merge next season in a bleak, but timely new arc.
Photo: JoJo Whilden/Netflix5. How will Morello cope without her baby? Lorna went into labor in the season finale, but she won't have much time to spend with her newborn before it has to go home with her husband Vinnie (John Magaro). Although Lorna has become much more stable in recent seasons, we worry what the separation from her baby will do to her. She has a history of paranoia and issues with impulse control, which could easily resurface when she's cut off from her first child. But with Nicky and Vinnie standing by her, we hope that their patience and support will be enough to calm Lorna's fears and assuage her grief over missing out on this special time, Otherwise, Lorna could wind up doing something stupid and/or dangerous that could result in an extended sentence or getting sent to SHU.
Photo: JoJo Whilden/Netflix6. Is Daya in serious danger? Look, Daya (Dascha Polanco) has never been one of our favorite characters. Not even close. But that doesn't mean we want her to die. Unfortunately, that seems to be what Daya was hurtling toward as her addiction continued to escalate throughout the season. Now that she's given up hope on ever getting out of prison and seeing her daughter again, Daya doesn't seem to believe she has anything to live for anymore other than the immediate distractions of sex and drugs.
That, sadly, isn't enough for Aleida (Elizabeth Rodriguez) to stop smuggling drugs into the prison, even though she now knows her daughter is consuming them as well. Aleida is proceeding under the mindset that Daya is already a lost cause and she needs to get enough money to save the rest of her children, but will she feel the same if Daya overdoses on the drugs she smuggled in? We doubt it. But we bet this is a question that will be explored in some form next season.
Photo: JoJo Whilden/Netflix7. Can we get more Daddy, please? Out of all the new characters introduced this season, there was a clear breakout star in Vicci Martinez's Daddy. She may have gotten Daya addicted to drugs and clearly did some other messed-up things in her past, but we still found ourselves falling in love with the troubled inmate. Daddy clearly has a big heart underneath her shady dealings and we'd love to get to know her more in the seasons to come. Less Badison, more Daddy, please!
Orange Is the New Black is available on Netflix now.
Note: contains spoilers for You season one.
There was a lot to take in after the release of Netflix’s You. Based on the novel of the same name by Caroline Kepnes, the psychological thriller stars Gossip Girl’s Penn Badgley as sociopathic bookstore owner Joe Goldberg, whose obsession with customer and writer Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail) uncovers a number of sinister revelations about his past.
The ten-episode series turned out to be the perfect blend of gripping drama, trashy fun and well-placed technophobic satire, making it the small-screen equivalent of an indulgent page-turner. Although since the show was told from the perspective of our antagonist Joe, You is less of a whodunnit and more of a whatdidhedonow.

If you loved it as much as we did, you’ll be pleased to know the show will be returning for a second outing – which is a good thing, considering the finale left us hanging off the edge of a cliff like a bunch of binge-watching maniacs.
Not only do we need to find out just WTF is going on after that ending, but there are a whole load of loose ends we’re hoping are tied up in the second season. Here they are – ten burning questions about You that round two needs to answer.
1. Is Joe telling the truth about Mr Mooney?
Season one was crafted in a way that left a lot more to be discovered about Mr Mooney (Mark Blum), the bookstore owner and alleged captor of teenage Joe – particularly when it comes to his physical health.
Yeah, Joe may’ve said the guy suffered a stroke and was saved by him a couple of days later, but we all know that the guy is a pretty determined liar. Plus, there are all kinds of motives as to why Joe would want to hurt him: he kept him prisoner in the bookstore basement and he knew Joe killed Candace’s lover, Elijah (Esteban Benito).
One theory goes that Joe feared Mooney would go to the police and, as such, chose to hurt him in this way so he’d be unable to tell the police. Taking this idea further, a Redditor added that perhaps Mooney saved Candace (Ambyr Childers) and that’s why Joe hurt him – out of anger for defending the ex over him.
Okay, so the latter is pushing it a bit. But the show at least suggests there’s a lot more story to be told about Joe and Mr Mooney’s complex relationship, something we’ll no doubt see unfold in season two. Speaking of which...
2. Was Joe trained to be a serial killer by Mr Mooney?
Maybe it wasn’t Joe who hurt Mr Mooney. Maybe Mr Mooney is the sadistic Godfather in this story and the whole glass-box-imprisonment stint was just a way for him to transform Joe into a cold-blooded killer – that’s the theory swirling around one corner of the internet.
But it doesn’t end there, as some think Joe’s got ideas to pass the torch along to young Paco (Luca Padovan), who we all know killed his evil stepdad in the last episode. “Do you guys think Mr Mooney is also a serial killer? It seems like he passed on his teachings to Joe,” wrote one Redditor, before another added, “He even went so far as to call it ‘a code’ they must follow. Looked like he was trying to mirror that relationship with Paco too.”
It would certainly explain why Mr Mooney knew exactly what to do when Joe admitted he’d killed Elijah, in the exact same way Joe knew what to do when Paco killed Ron (Daniel Cosgrove).
This idea was supported by comments from showrunner Sera Gamble when she told The Hollywood Reporter: “Joe was taken in by a guy who had a certain type of life philosophy that really did rub off on Joe. Joe was already a teenager by the time he even met Mr Mooney.”
Gamble went on to confirm we’ll be seeing more about Joe from earlier in his life in the follow-up. “Those are the things we're starting to get into for season two.” Which brings us onto our next point...
3. What happened to Joe’s parents?
We’re told Joe is a man who was abandoned by his abusive and neglectful parents, a man who has never known true love in his life.
However, what if Joe was the one who killed them? Maybe Mr Mooney saw the killer potential in Joe after he offed his parents and decided to take him on as his protégé. Or maybe he just needed a fellow sociopath to adopt as the psychopathic heir to his unexpected bookstore legacy.
Whatever the outcome, as Gamble confirmed, season two is set to delve into Joe’s earlier life a lot more. Meaning there’s a possibility we find out whether Joe’s telling the truth about Mr and Mrs Goldberg in the form of flashbacks.
4. Will Paco keep Joe’s secret and vice-versa?
These two have got some serious shit on each other. Like take-it-to-the-grave shit. Paco’s only young but already he’s a killer (although his kill was more of an impulsive act – Ron was an abusive dick, after all) and Joe knows all about it.
Meanwhile, Paco doesn’t quite understand the ins and outs of Joe’s past, but he did see Beck screaming: “He has killed people, he’s gonna kill me!” Next thing you know, Beck’s dead. “I know Joe and Paco were close, but close enough to mutually live with the secret of what happened to Beck? Idk,” wrote one Redditor.
Also, following the death of Ron, Paco learned about Joe’s nifty technique for covering up murders: by stealing the victim’s phone and tweeting or texting from it. Probably not the smartest move letting a young kid into his sinister world, but now he’s stuck with it whether he likes it or not. The question remains: Will they continue to cover for each other in season two?
5. What’s going to happen to Dr Nicky?
Poor old Dr Nicky (John Stamos) picked the wrong girl to sleep with. Joe’s plan to frame the therapist for Beck’s murder was almost too easy – Nicky was already having an affair with Beck and as an attempt to be set free by Joe before her death, she wrote a memoir about her ordeal which pointed towards the doctor as the killer of Peach (Shay Mitchell), Benji (Lou Taylor Pucci) and herself.
Job done? Not quite. Joe wasn’t the most precise of killers and has left a whole lotta evidence behind for his crimes, not to mention Dr Nicky professes his innocence. Whether or not he will continue to do so in season two is yet to be seen, but in the same interview with THR, Gamble seemed to suggest the character will be making a comeback.
Dvshade Easy Looks Serial Season 1
She said: “It's too soon to say definitely whether John Stamos will return in season two but we have been talking a lot about the character and we're excited to keep telling that story.”
Side note: While we’re on the topic of Dr Nicky, we couldn’t resist questioning the fact that he didn’t figure out Joe was talking about Beck during their therapy sessions. After all, the pair of them both gave Nicky pretty explicit details about their relationship, like parties they’d been to and fights they’d had.
Also, if Nicky was sleeping with Beck, surely he would’ve just hit up her Instagram and seen Joe plastered all over it? This is 2019, after all.
6. What about the jar of pee?
If Joe is such a good serial killer, why on earth did he leave a jar of his own pee at Peach’s house when he killed her? It just doesn’t add up, but that’s not what we’re here to discuss.
What we’re here to discuss is whether this damning piece of evidence will come back to bite Joe in the arse in season two. It’s looking likely, particularly since the PI investigating Beck’s BFF’s death mentioned they were doing tests on the urine sample at the end of the series.
“Part of the fun of continuing the story is that the loose ends from Joe’s past are still dangling and could come back to him at anytime,” explained Gamble. “He is very worried about the fact that Peach Salinger's family has hired people to investigate her alleged suicide, and there is evidence potentially still at her house from season one.”
Not only with the pee, but with the gun he used to shoot Peach. Not to mention the treasure trove of evidence linking Joe to every murder stashed away in his bathroom ceiling. A stash place Paco knows about, no less! “If you look at every act of violence that he does in season one, that is potentially something that could come back and bite him,” concluded Gamble.
7. Why is Joe able to cherry pick when he decides to feel empathy?
One minute he’s looking after the abused kid down the hall. The next minute he’s ruthlessly stalking his love interest. Soon after he’s battering people around the head. Safe to say that Joe’s sociopathic tendencies are a little inconsistent – the character appears to jump from genuine and caring to angry and violent, and not in a fake or meditated way either. He’s a nice guy and a narcissist.
Maybe there’s a reason his personality is so conflicted. It could be related to Mr Mooney, or it could go further back to his parents (or lack thereof). There’s no doubt the second round will delve further into Joe’s psyche, and uncover more of the toxic masculinity that is at conflict within the character.
8. Is Candace actually dead?
Thanks to the gigantic curveball thrown at us in the finale, we know the answer to this is yes. Or is it? According to the book, Joe drowned Candace in Brighton Beach after she tried to break up with him. Could it be that the final scene in which the long-lost ex tells Joe “I’m not dead” was merely a delusion, an apparition of Joe’s guilt finally catching up on him?
Probably not, particularly since Gamble, while coy about Candace’s role in season two, did exclaim, “She’s not nearly as dead as [Joe] thought.” The outlook is good that we’ll discover more about what happened between the unhappy couple when the new episodes arrive.
9. Will Joe find a new obsession?
Anyone who’s read the book will know that the final scene in the show plays out much like the final part of the book, in that a mystery woman visits the bookstore and, much like Beck and Candace, Joe is instantly obsessed. However, where the book differs is that instead of the mystery woman turning out to be Candace, it’s an entirely new character, implying she’s Joe’s next stalker subject. Sinister, right?
Well what if season two throws a similar plot point our way? After all, it’s been confirmed the second series will follow Joe in LA as he tries to find love again – so perhaps we’re set to see the killer carrying out his same narcissistic practices on a brand new subject. You never know, he might even meet his match.
It’s not completely out of the question, particularly since Gamble divulged to Vulture that they’re planning to diverge a little bit more from the second book than they did from the first.
Dvshade Easy Looks Serial Season 4
“But in order to tell that story for TV,” explained Gamble, “we made some changes along the way – and every time a butterfly flaps its wings in season one, by season two there’s a tsunami.” Looks like there’s a storm brewing!
Halloween Easy Looks
10. Bonus: Will Joe’s new obsession ever close her curtains?
No disrespect to the dead, but damn Beck, did you ever think of closing those damn curtains? Whether it be fighting, getting starkers or having sex with her (sort of) boyfriends, there was absolutely nothing left to the imagination when it came to Beck thanks to her ludicrously exposed windows.
Dvshade Easy Looks Serial Season 2
Joe must’ve thought he’d hit the jackpot – hopefully his next victim won’t be so accessible.
